Might living constellations of atoms affect evolution?

Homo sapiens are descended from apes. Homos and apes are constellations of atoms. If ape atoms, say those of Lucy of Africa, can evolve into Homo sapiens, why can't living Homo atoms evolve into a rudimentary this or that.
