How was HIV developed?

My friend told me it was when scientists addedtogether a human sperm cell to an ape ovary. The ape had some kind of animal version of HIV and that evolved into a form that was able to spread through humans. This sounds plausible but is it true? If it is, can you go into a little more detail for me? And if it isn't, can you please tell me the correct theory. Thank you
